L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Le Nail Art in Poudre D'or

After coveting these for ages I finally picked some up in Boots Manchester.  I went for Poudre D'or as I think they're the most striking and look really expensive and luxurious.  At £8.99 (or thereabouts) they're not cheap but I bought these with Boots points so I was even more pleased.

I've not used nail wraps for ages so my application technique was a bit off at first.  These don't need any heat or anything to apply, they're literally just stickers.  They feel like plastic but the actual design feels like matte velvet with little raised gems.  My thumbnails used the biggest sized wraps so if you've got larger nails - which I don't think I have, I never normally have to use the biggest oness - then give these a miss.  You stick them to your nails, pull them tight to smooth out any wrinkles (ahem) and then file off the edges, I used a glass file.

From a distance they look okay but if you look closely they're a bit wrinkled in some places!

 

In terms of longevity these didn't really last long but that might be down to my poor application (it probably is).   I really liked them on, they look so glam but I do think they're quite expensive for what they are so I don't think I'll be buying these or any of the other designs in future.  They're more of a one night only kind of nail.

Lauren's Way Dream Rollers

Sleep in rollers are something that have sort of passed me by, I didn't think I needed them or that they'd be that effective. But when I was asked to try the Lauren's Way Dream Rollers, I was still interested as it's a brand I've heard a lot about but never actually tried anything from.  Anyway, I like sleep and I like looking good so actually these are a bit of a no brainer for me...longer in bed and bouncy hair?  Yes please!

These are pink medium sized soft rollers filled with foam so that they're more comfortable when you sleep.  You get 20 in a pack and on first glance I thought there was way too many but nope, I used them all in my hair!  You can get packs of 8 too.  Putting them in was easy, you just roll your hair around them like a normal roller and the velcro keeps them in - you can use clips to secure them even more but I didn't need to do this.  They go into dry hair after it's been washed and dried (when these first came out I wasn't sure if they went in dry or wet hair, like those bendy rollers I've used disasterously twice as a kid).  It probably took about 10 minutes in total to get them in my hair.

I actually popped by the Lauren's Way stand when I was at Professional Beauty North and I have to say I didn't look half as glam with these rollers in as the gorgeous models on the stand did with them in that day! 

So, the sleep.  I can't say sleeping with these in guarantees the best sleep I've ever had, but they're not uncomfortable and every roller did stay in at night.  As someone who moves around a lot in her sleep, if they stay put for me then they'll stay put for you.  Getting these out was actually harder than getting them in as the velcro's really strong.  I didn't think they pulled on my hair or anything though.

I wasn't really sure what the curl from these was going to be like but I really really hoped it wasn't like ringlets.  Luckily the curls were gorgeous and I loved the end result!  My hair was big and bouncy with a bit of a curl at the end, just the way I like it!  I suppose as your hair's dry and there's no heat styling there isn't going to be a huge ringlet going on.  This is basically how I try to dry my hair or pay the hairdresser to do it, all done while I sleep.

I really would recommend these as you can style while you sleep and it reduces the amount of heated tools you use on your hair.  I'm pretty sure I've already mentioned the C-word recently, but I do think these would be a great Christmas present for someone.

Bare Minerals Ready SPF20 Foundation in Medium Dark

 
I was recently sent this foundation for review and unfortunately it wasn't the right colour for me.  Luckily the lovely Haitch from www.nailtart.com stepped in to help me out with a review! So, here's what she thought of the foundation:

 

When I took the foundation out of the box the first thing that struck me was how nice the packaging was of the foundation.  Instead of the usual cheap feeling plastic, this compact felt expensive and smooth to the touch.

I am a big Bare Minerals fan because I have oily skin. I usually use their loose powder foundation and apply this with a kabuki brush. This foundation is a pressed powder and I wondered if I should use a sponge to apply it.

On the first morning of trying this product I thought I would go with what I know. I took my kabuki brush and tapped it against the compact powder. A reasonable amount was on the brush.

I applied the colour to the back of my hand  with my brush and it was almost invisible.  It had blended perfectly into my skin. There was no orange colour and there was no excess or cakeiness.

I then brushed it over my cheeks and across my nose. Despite this shade being medium dark it does not go on as dark as you would think. With bare minerals shades I change from summer to winter. I have three different shades I use throughout the year. This shade gave me a bit of a warm glow across my cheeks as I added more there  and blended perfectly into my face.

After six days of using this foundation I loved the following things about it:

• The colour blended really nicely with my skin
• Despite the SPF 20 in this product I didn’t find it added any oiliness to my face
• The colour of the foundation didn’t change throughout the dark as my skin got warmer
• The size of the compact

The only thing that I could find that I didn’t love:

The opening of the compact I found quite tricky and possibly with long term use I could end up breaking my nails if I forced it. This wouldn’t be an issue if my nails were very short but they are currently a bit longer than usual. But that is the only downside I can find!

I really loved this foundation and the great thing about bare minerals is that they do so many shades which are perfect for so many skin types. As someone with oily skin this was perfect on me.

Nazila Love Glamour Nailglitz in Barbie (and giveaway!)

I finally got myself some of these nails after blogging about them last month.  I haven't seen these in Superdrug yet so I picked these up at Professional Beauty North West which was held last Sunday.  Apparently these nails have been seen on Tulisa, Rihanna and Amanda Holden.
 

Professional Beauty was great, I've been before and it does get really busy. As I'm a bit of a boy when it comes to shopping (if I can't buy it online then I like to go in a shop, buy what I came to get and get out) I went early, managed to see all the stands I wanted to - plus quite a few more - and get out before it got too chaotic and before things started to sell out as they can do.

Nazila Love Glam was a stand I was looking out for and I wasn't disappointed, they had all of their gorgeous false nails on display and I felt like a kid in a sweet shop.  I picked out the Barbie ones I've coveted since I saw them and here they are:

The sizes of these nails are fine, I had no problems finding nails that fit (and the embellished ones were all the right size for me).  They don't come with glue but instead have little applicator tabs/stickers with them which are alright but I have to say I prefer glue.  Applying the nails was ridiculously straightforward.

Did I like them?  Yes.  Would I wear them?  I don't know!  I can't think where I'd wear them to for starters plus they're obviously not that practical, especially with the sticker tabs but I knew this anyway.  I haven't worn them for any length of time so I'm not sure how easily they ping off but the embellishments seem attached pretty securely.  They do feel quite heavy on the nails, especially the ones with the big stars on them, because of the amount of stuff on them.

I can't deny that I think that these are gorgeous - there are so many from the range that I love - and as I've said before, I realise they won't be to everyones taste. A clever way to store your hair extensions...the HeadKase.

I don't tend to wear hair extensions quite as much now as I used to (a night out was never a night out unless I had some extensions in a few years ago) but I do still wear them every now and again, usually to do something like a long fishtail plait or to add length when I wear my hair curly.  I also used to spend quite a lot of money on them as I wore them frequently but now I just pick up cheap synthetic wefts that can still be heat styled.  I like them long and usually get 22-24 inch.

Anyhow, hair extension preferences aside, I usually store my extensions either in the packaging they come in or in a plastic bag.  Oh yes, I'm that glamorous!  Neither of these options are ideal because the hair gets knotty and tangled or it gets weird kinks in it from being stuffed in a drawer.  It's hard to get these kinks out with synthetic hair sometimes too as you don't want to use a high heat on it.

So when I was asked if I wanted to try the Headkase Hair Extensions Case I was really interested, it sounded like the perfect solution to my storage problems!  As well as using it to store your extensions, you can use it when you put them in to as it can hang with either hooks or suction cups so you can easily see what you've got to put in, both are strong enough too.

Basically, it works.  It keeps my extensions looking neat, ensures they stay smooth and wearable and looks pretty too.  I haven't really found I use the suckers to stick them up that much but they do work and I can see why they'd be useful.  I think this is a really nice product and if you do spend a lot of money on extensions then this is well worth the money to protect the expensive hair you've bought. It's a simple idea, executed well and makes a difference.

As you can see, my extensions are long and stick out of the end of the HeadKase but it's fine as they just roll up along with the rest of it and stay in pristine condition.  It looks pretty too, which I actually think is really important!  If you travel a lot or are taking your extensions away somewhere with you (getting ready at a mates house or something) then again, these are a good idea.

My experience with Weightwatchers ProPoints so far...

I'm sure you're all familiar with what Weightwatchers is. I've been following the Weightwatchers ProPoints plan for 6 weeks now and I'm pleased to say I've lost over a stone!  It's not a revolutionary way of eating or anything, it's basically bog standard healthy eating with a more structured approach and has certainly made me think more about what I'm eating and portion size.  There have been a few surprises along the way, for example noodles and my favourite yoghurt are both really high in points.

Ah the points.  The whole system is based on points. You get a points allowance for each day based on height, weight and age and all foods have a points value based on the amount of protein, carbs, fat and fibre. Mine's 32 at the moment, the minimum points you should have is 26. You then get 49 extra points to spread over the week, you can use it to either supplement your daily allowance or use it for a big blowout. This was a godsend in my first week as it was my birthday so there were cakes, treats and a couple of meals out. I just built them into my points and still managed to lose 5lbs the first week.  It takes a bit of getting used to and you have to remember to record what you've eaten (snacks, sauces, butter with stuff etc.).  You also can't carry points over from the day before if you don't use them, you have to use them or lose them!

So, what do I eat normally?  Is it just dust 3 times a day?  Well, no. Here's a fairly typical day along with points values (I'm sometimes a bit more lax with my evening meal so that's where the points rack up for me):

• Breakfast: Detox tea (0), fruit (0), WW oaty bar (2)
• Lunch:  Ham salad (3), Quavers (2), fruit salad (0)
• Tea:  Quorn southern fried burger (3), potato wedges (6), veg (0) 
• Snacks:  Fruit (0), yoghurt (3), carrot sticks (0), celery with cottage cheese (2)
• Drinks:  Water (0), cups of tea with sugar (1.5)

See what I mean?  It's basically healthy eating.  Fruit and veg (with the exception of avocado and corn I think) is free in points so if I feel hungry I tend to have fruit, fruit tea, water, yoghurt or diet coke.

I go to the meetings and pay weekly. I have to admit I don't know that I find the meetings THAT thrilling, though the woman who runs them is really nice and helpful, but apparently you're 50% more likely to lose weight if you attend meetings so I'm there! They weigh you at the meeting too. You can also pay monthly and get access to Weightwatchers online which gives access to points calculators, online tracking, the Weightwatchers mobile app and menu lists. I use an android app that I downloaded from the Amazon called  Ultimate Value Diary Plus for £1.99 - not Weightwatchers endorsed but it seems to do everything I need and works for me. I can track my points, search their database for points values, scan barcodes of packaging to get points values of foods, calculate points values and monitor my progress. All handily on my phone which is always with me.

As well as healthy food, Weightwatchers have a food range.  Some stuff is nice, some just isn't.  I've tried a few bits and pieces and I like the ready salted crisps, crackers (even though they're really thin!) and caramel wafer bars.  Some of the readymeals are ok too and I keep them in the freezer as a back up but to be honest I'd rather stick with normal food as they do taste very ready meal-ish.

In terms of exercise, I haven't been doing anything strenuous.  I walk to and from work most days (which according to Google maps is 3 miles a day) and I sometimes walk Pearl on a night but as she's so little we don't normally go that far.  This isn't any different to what I was doing before though.  I feel like my skin looks better too and I feel less tired, probably because of all the fruit, veg and water I have!

I wouldn't say I've found it easy so far because eating chips, chocolate and pizza every day would have been easier but I'm not struggling to stick with it and lose weight like I have done when I've dieted previously.  My boyfriend says I'm a lot less moany than when I've tried to lose weight in the past too and I think this is down to the fact I can still have the odd treat here and there but build it in to my points and still lose weight. There is a bit more planning and calculating than normal, and you do need to exercise some self control but I think the calculating points helps as it makes you stop and think about what you're eating.  It's working for me and I'm losing between 1lb and 3lbs each week so it's coming off gradually but I've still got a bit of a way to go so I'll updated again at my next (fingers crossed) 14lb milestone.

Lulu's Time Bomb Glory Days Day Cream and Flash Back Night Cream

At 26, I've decided to start using anti ageing products properly - despite the fact that I vividly remember my beauty tutor telling our rather horrified class that skin was classed as mature over the age of 21 (I was 21 at the time and nearly had a breakdown!).  And despite the fact that I keep seeing people my age and younger who are botoxing up...not going to go there at the moment.  I caught sight of my make up free skin in the mirror in natural light the other day and really did think it looked a lot older than it has previously.

 

So when I was asked if I would like to try Lulu's Glory Day Timebomb Day Cream and Night Cream I was really pleased.  I don't have a really strict skincare routine so this has been the perfect opportunity to get into one.  I love the packaging on these - both the box and the container - and I think they look fancy enough to give as a gift (Christmas is not that far away people!). The night cream is in a darker pot than the day cream, which I think is appropriate and shows that a bit of thought has gone into this.  It also makes it easier to pick up the right one if you've just got up!

Both of these creams smell like lavender, which I have to admit isn't a smell I'm wild on, but it's subtle enough that it doesn't bother me.  The day cream definitely has a hint of pearlised brightening cream/shimmer in it (I'm thinking Benefit Moonbeam type of stuff but way less concentrated and a lot more subtle) that just gives a bit more of an awake look after you apply your day moisturiser.  They're both hydrating without feeling greasy and are easily absorbed into the skin too which helps as you don't have to sit around for an hour after applying waiting for it to sink in.  The night cream is certainly richer than the day cream, as you'd expect, but still absorbs easily.

I've been really pleased with how these work and I definitely think the day cream has brightened up my skin and the night cream has worked well to combat the dry skin that seems to start with me soon as the weather goes a little more autumnal.  My boyfriend has been using them a little and he's impressed too!  That goes to show how subtle the pearlescent part of this is, he doesn't look glittery when it's on anyway.

Latest purchases - Estee Lauder, Batiste, No7, Lush and L'Oréal

Here's a little sneak peak at what I've bought this week - full reviews to come on soon. I've got a lot of things to write about at the moment!

L'Oréal Professionel Serie Expert Silver Shampoo for Grey or White Hair 1500ml - I've blogged about the smaller version of this before so when I spotted a 1500ml version on feelunique.com* for only slightly more than double the price of the 250ml version (£8.10 vs £20.99) I snapped it up straight away!

L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Volume Expand Conditioner 150ml and L'Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Intense Repair Masque 200ml - picked these up on a whim with my shampoo, wondering if I should have bought the Shine Blonde conditioner instead/too.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation - the UK's best selling foundation and one of my favourites, especially since we're officially not in summer anymore and I feel like I need a heavier coverage foundation.  It really does last and I think it evens out my skin really well.  Pleasingly, I'd managed to accumulate enough Boots points to pick this up.

L'Oréal Color Riche 3D Nail Stickers in Poudre D'or - I've been craving these for ages but the Boots near me didn't have them so when I nipped into Manchester (for an exam, booo!) I headed to Boots on Market Street and lo and behold they had all the designs in stock.  This is my favourite design and I can't wait to try it out!

No 7 Eye Make Up Remover - I've recommended this to loads of people, it's really effective and if you get it with those £5 No7 vouchers that are always on the go it's about £3.  It's quite oily though so if you don't like that then you might want to try something else.

Lush Candy Mountain Bubble Bar, Melting Snowman Bath Melt, Phoenix Rising Bath Bomb and (of course) Snow Fairy Shower Gel - enough said really, they're pretty and they smell good. I didn't realise that Lush reincarnate Creamy Candy (a fave of mine) as something else at Christmas but apparently they do and Candy Mountain is this years...no wonder I liked it!

Batiste Graffiti - as I've said before, I can't keep up!  This is one of Batiste's latest offerings and is a Boots exclusive. I love the packaging but the scent isn't quite doing it for me, I expected the apple in it to be stronger. It still works as well though. Batiste Wild (leopard print can, vanilla scent) continues to reign supreme for me!

 

Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub (and Snow Fairy is back!)

I admit it, I didn't really have that high expectations of this but I was actually pleasantly surprised. With a few exceptions (Buffy and Lemony Flutter), whenever I've veered away from my usual Lush bath bubble/bath bomb/bubble bar I've always been a teeny tiny bit disappointed.  This may well just be me being picky though as other people seem to love Lush stuff in all it's guises.

Right, onto the Lush Ocean Salt Facial Scrub.  It smells lovely, very fresh and ocean-like, as you'd probably expect, with a hint of citrus to it. The salt pieces in it are quite big and scrubby so if you have very sensitive or reactive skin I would maybe give this a miss.  They certainly do the job removing dry skin though, and this left my skin looking and feeling clean and renewed.

The salt pieces are suspended in a lovely, creamy cleanser (which again, I didn't expect!) which is in real contrast to the scrubby part.  It contains grapefruit and lime essential oil, it also contains avocado butter, coconut oil, lanolin, seaweed absolute and violet absolute.

I also tried the Geophyzz Bath Bomb but it wasn't really my cup of tea, it smelled a bit earthy compared to the sweet and/or fruity smells that I usually like.  I hated the way it looked as well!  Part of the reason I like Lush bath bombs and bubble bars is the 'pretty factor' and this didn't have it.

 

I've just noticed on the Lush website that Snow Fairy is now available!  I absolutely love this sweet, fruity shower gel and so do lots of others.  I always stock up on this when it comes out around Christmas.  Last year I picked up the lip tint too, which was just as yummy.  I'll be making sure to pick up some Snow Fairy next time I'm near Lush!

 



 

Batiste Dry Shampoo in Seductive and Elegant Lace (a quick review)

I admit it, I'm a Batiste fiend.  I tend to stock up on Boots 3 for 2's and while I was stocking up I noticed that the Lace version was there (I first saw it mentioned on blogs months ago after a Batiste blog event) so I picked one up.

The packaging is pretty and very obviously Batiste - if I'd been thinking properly I'd have taken the photo above on a lace background, but I haven't.  Performance-wise, it works just as well as all the other Batiste's, you just have to be careful not to be too heavy handed when you spray or you'll end up with white roots!  I saw some reviews a while ago that said that Batiste Lace was invisible but to be honest I can't see that it's any different to normal Batiste?  I've not compared them side to side but I haven't noticed a difference when using it which is where I think it counts.

The scent is a lot more musky and like a grown up perfume than some of the other Batistes and I think it's ok but I still prefer the vanilla-scented, leopard print Batiste Wild (my favourite).  I'm obviously not sophisticated enough!  I bought mine from Boots.com*.

I've also noticed this week that Batiste are bringing out some more new versions, I can't keep up!  New Batiste Graffiti and Paisley will both be coming out soon.  I don't think I'm that bothered about Paisley (exclusive to Superdrug), as it's probably not a scent that I'll be that keen on but Graffiti (exclusive to Boots) sounds gorgeous and just the type of fruity scent I'll like, love the packaging too!  There's also a Batiste Hint of Colour in Vibrant & Red that's come out too, for redheads, obviously.  Phew!

Blue Cosmic Print Olive Super Skinny Jeans

I'm obsessed with cosmic/galaxy/galactic prints at the moment and I've been looking for the perfect piece for a while.  I like the prints on a dark blue background like this best, and I also prefer the ones where it's a distinct galaxy print rather than something more abstract and tie dyed.

I don't think I'll be buying this due to the price but I really like it - it's a fairly simple design but I think it's so pretty.  I'm hoping to find a cheaper version of this on the high street but I haven't managed to find one yet.  I've even asked my Mam if she thinks I could DIY one (she said yes!) as she's much more knowledgeable about that sort of thing than I am.

For some weird reason, I also like tassels.  I think this belt would be a great accessory even with a more plain outfit.  Shame it's sold out in all sizes though!

These floral leggings are from the collection that Lana Del Rey is modelling for H&M and I think they're pretty and wearable (and a good price!).  I don't often buy things from H&M as I find it a bit difficult to rummage through and find things but they do have some great stuff.

This is also from the Lana Del Rey collection.  I like jumpers (I secretly love autumn and winter dressing even though I love the sun!) and I think I suit baby pink.  It's an angora mix so I'd say this will be super soft too.

I had this dress in white but I Ebayed it as to be honest it just wasn't practical.  The fabric of these Topshop scuba dresses is really flattering and I love this type of dark purple.  I want!

I think, given last weeks weather, wellies are going to be a winter essential and I think these are really unusual.  I don't think I can bring myself to spend £90 on wellies though so I'll just have to make do with my black mock croc ones that I like anyway.



MesmerEyez XtremeEyez Contact Lenses in White Out - brilliant for halloween!

Well it's October and at the end of the month we have halloween, I've not decided if I'll be dressing up or anything yet but anyway, on to the matter at hand. I was sent these to review by MesmerEyez and quite frankly I think these are ace.

I've been wearing contacts for years (though I wear my specs more now) so I actually found these really easy to put in and take out. My boyfriend doesn't wear lenses and never has so he found them a bit tricky to put in. He managed though! I think the key is to persevere and deffo have a practice in advance of wearing them.These aren't the comfiest lenses I've ever worn but I could certainly wear these for a night at a party or something. Here's some photos of him wearing the lenses, he's not normally this interested in blogging stuff when it's nail varnishes, hmmm!

Creepy huh?  He's usually quite handsome, honest!  These came with lens solution and a little lens holder which is handy.  The other thing is to make sure you use these safely and observe some basic hygiene rules like washing your hands, only rinsing them in the solution and not keeping them longer than you should. This info all comes with the solution if you aren't familiar with lenses (you get this with the longer wear lenses, mine are the 3 month ones).
